About the Plant
Known in Malta as ħarruba, the carob tree was introduced to the islands more than a thousand years ago and has long since become part of the Maltese rural landscape. Its sweet, edible pods—also known as St John’s Bread—can be eaten directly, made into traditional Maltese carob syrup and sweets, or ground into a naturally sweet alternative to cocoa powder.
