About the Plant
Known in Maltese as garni tal-pipa, Friar’s cowl is an indigenous tuberous plant found in maquis, sheltered rocky places and partly shaded ground. From November to February, it produces a striped, hood-like spathe around a slender spadix—the unusual structure behind its English name.
